This course provides a comprehensive overview of parental leave entitlements and obligations in New Zealand, based on the Parental Leave and Employment Protection Act 1987. It is designed for employers, HR professionals, and employees who need to understand the complexities of parental leave, including eligibility, types of leave, and associated responsibilities.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the different types of parental leave available in New Zealand, including primary carer leave, extended leave, negotiated carer leave, and partner's leave.
- Determine employee eligibility for parental leave based on the 6-month and 12-month employment tests.
- Outline the notice requirements for employees taking parental leave.
- Describe an employer's obligations
- Define the rules around "keeping in touch" hours during parental leave.
- Describe the process for employees returning to work after parental leave, including the 26-week 'period of preference'.
- Explain how other types of leave (annual leave, alternative days, etc.) interact with parental leave.
- Identify restrictions to taking parental leave.
